Introduction to the Uzbek Musical Instrument: Chang

The Chang is a traditional Uzbek musical instrument that holds a special place in the rich musical heritage of Uzbekistan. It is a type of plucked zither, belonging to the broader family of string instruments, and is known for its delicate, harp-like sound and elegant form.

Historically, the Chang has been played in Central Asia since ancient times and is often associated with the music of courtly life and classical maqam traditions. It was once widely used across regions that are now part of modern-day Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and surrounding areas. The instrument typically features a trapezoidal wooden body with a series of strings stretched across it, which are plucked with fingers or plectrums to produce melodic and harmonic textures.

Though the use of Chang diminished over time, efforts in recent decades have helped revive it as part of Uzbekistan’s national musical identity. Musicians and ethnomusicologists have restored the instrument’s traditional construction and performance techniques, and it now appears in cultural festivals, conservatories, and folk music ensembles.

Today, the Chang serves not only as a symbol of Uzbekistan’s artistic past but also as a bridge connecting the country’s ancient musical traditions with contemporary interpretations, reflecting the enduring spirit of Uzbek culture.
