Introduction to Indigenous Canadian Art

Indigenous Canadian art is a rich and diverse cultural tradition that reflects the deep history, spirituality, and worldview of the First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples of Canada. Rooted in centuries-old practices, Indigenous art includes a wide range of forms such as beadwork, carving, painting, textiles, performance, and contemporary media.

Each Indigenous group has its own distinct artistic traditions, often shaped by geography, environment, and spiritual beliefs. For example, the West Coast First Nations are known for their intricate totem poles and wood carvings, while the Inuit produce powerful sculptures and prints that depict Arctic life and mythology. Métis art is often characterized by its vibrant floral beadwork, blending European and Indigenous aesthetics.

Historically, Indigenous art served both practical and ceremonial purposes—used in storytelling, rituals, regalia, tools, and everyday life. While early European colonization disrupted many of these practices, Indigenous artists have continued to preserve, adapt, and revitalize their cultural expressions.
